If you’re just learning about Photog ShootOuts or couldn’t make it to the April one, no worries there’s another one coming in June! So get connected, join in, and shoot. Alright onto the recap for our segment, “Making the Best of Bad Lighting Situations”. Inevitably, as a photographer you will at some point be asked to shoot in bad lighting. For us wedding photogs, this is most often a beach ceremony at 2PM on what seems like the brightest day of the year. California is covered with beaches, grassy plains, and open flower fields completely void of any even shade. No matter what you’re shooting it’ll happen – so best be prepared.

Photography Tip – All lighting is not equal, don’t fight bad lighting make it work with you

Front lighting (above)-

This technique uses the sun as a giant hot lamp, it gives high contrast and high saturation to images. Excellent for giving context and surrounding to your subject. This technique is not recommended for portraits or close ups. When shooting with front light always keep in mind it’s pros and cons. Example, we all know high noon + direct lighting creates shadows under the eyes, so don’t make the focus of your photo the face or eyes. Remember a big plus of using this technique is that exposure levels for your subject and your background will be even (ie. blue skies, colorful sunsets) – take advantage of these pros.

Back lighting (above)-

This technique uses your subject’s shadow to create even shade anywhere and anytime. Excellent for giving even skin tones, no harsh shadows, no squinting, and no glossy skin – it won’t be as good as the shady side of a building, but you can’t move a building to the beach can you? This technique is NOT recommended for trying to get lots of surrounding context or skylines to your photos. If you are at a beach shoot, don’t expect to get a pretty sunset using a back lighting technique (unless you want to add flash into the mix). For best results make sure your camera is shooting from inside your subjects shadow (i.e. block the sun with their head or body). You will get washy backgrounds but then you aren’t focusing on the background are you? Just like “eye shadows” in front lighting – keep in mind what your pros and cons are and focus on the pros.

Yes, we’ve added a new photographer to the Nathaniel Kam Photography team! Previously one of our dedicated 2nd shooters, Lina is making the move towards becoming a full primary photographer. Finally part 2 of our portfolio shoot with Phyllis! For this one, I really wanted to focus on our color palette and also give it a casual wintery feel to contrast the first one.

The first article I decided on was the hat. The color was just perfect, it wasn’t too bright and definitely worked well with Phyllis’ skin and hair tones. From there we built up the rest of the outfit one piece at a time.

Now since the hat did commit us to the Autumn / Wintery look, a scarf was the next piece to track down.

I settled on the amazingly soft and warm blue wool scarf pictured above. I did look into other fabrics and materials, but since we had the hat already, I definitely felt a wool scarf would keep the look tied together better.

Footwear was also a fun little scavenger hunt, I literally went through every type of boot, flat, and shoe in my head before settling on the boots. That said, nothing says winter to me like a nice pair of boots.

So a bit about the colors for this shoot. This past spring I got really into HGTV, more specifically their design shows, Color Splash with David Bromstad being one of my favorites (I also highly recommend House Hunters). Well taking some of his ideas and theories on interior design in mind I wanted this shoot to really reflect a similar approach to color.

With everything from the clothes to the location we kept mostly to very cool colors, blues, greens, and purples. All except the hat, and that is for a good reason. The hat is our accent piece, the “color splash”. It is meant to pop out of the sea of blues and greens, grab your attention, and bring it in right to our subject.

Slightly more scientifically, the hat is a complimentary color (<-check out the color wheel, it’s pretty cool) to the blues, greens and purples. This means it occupies the opposite side of the color spectrum from blue, green, and purple so it will be the most noticeable against those colors as well as help your brain to “neutralize” out the image (which our brains like).

For these outdoor ones we also made use of our environment to give us some natural frames and color contrasts. Take special notice to the blue door framing our model as well as the contrasting blue sky, red walls, and blue door.

These were some of my favorites, the colors were just amazing. A special thanks to Sang for helping us out on the lights here (it was literally pitch black while we were shooting)

Looking to gain experience in the photo industry? We are always looking for dedicated 2nd shooters, lighting assistants, and interns.

First off – my apologies for the lack of updates on our general blog! We’ve been having a pretty busy wedding season and so our other shoots seem to be taking a bit of a hold. This is however, one of those rare chances where we had time to get one in for you. Best of all we didn’t just shoot it, we did all the scouting, shopping, styling, and direction on it too. I was recently going over our numbers for 2010 and it appears for every 10-15 shoots or weddings we do for hire we only do 1 shoot for our own portfolio pieces. So that in mind, I’ve been making a real conscious effort to put as much into these as possible – so by all means enjoy!

Gold Pleated Dress ~$60

Chiffon Flower Headband $7.50

First off I had to track down a model, Phyllis had been an acquaintance and we’ve always had a lot mutual friends. Working with her was just a pleasure, absolutely cooperative and enthusiastic she really helped to make my job that much easier and more fun. Planning the shoot, I think it took us 5 hours in all to find all the clothes and accessories around San Diego. All in all though, it was nice to be calling all the shots on one of my own projects.

The dress we found at Nordstrom Rack in Mission Valley, the accessories are Charlotte Russe

Amber Clouds Necklace $10.50

Finding the dress was definitely the hardest part but after we did, it was all about accessories. And while the headband for me was a given, when it came to necklaces it definitely took a bit of thought. My original idea was to have a statement piece necklace, but since we chose a dress with a print and high neckline that idea was pretty much out of the question. That said, there were two ways we could go, choker or long. I personally thought that a choker would mimic the dress’ neckline a bit too much and wanted some more variation in the lines the necklace would be adding so I decided on long necklaces. When picking the perfect necklace I wanted one that could blend in and enhance the dress without disappearing completely. And so we arrived at the amber necklace which worked well with the dress’s shape, added those lines I wanted, kept to our color palette, and even matched up with the buttons pretty well.

Flower Bracelet $4.00

Once we had the necklace I definitely wanted some hand accessories but these were a lot easier to pick. Keeping with our flowry and gold motif, this bracelet was just perfect.

Burnished Butterfly Ring $4.00

The ring, on the other hand (no pun intended), was a bit of a toss up. Do we go with all flowers or not? I think the dress, headband, and bracelet were flowers enough for me and since butterflies are hardly a stretch for the theme it was a good fit.

Now about the location, I’ve been wanting to shoot here FOREVER. But it is privately owned and almost always filled with construction works, contractors, or clients and is just never really available to go into let alone shoot in. As luck would have it though, I ran into the owner (quite literally) and managed to get approval to come in and take some shots while the space was empty. Ultra urban looking and with massive amounts of shooting space this location was like a dream and we were just so happy we got to use it even for just a couple hours.

The first time I walked in here, all I could picture was the opening scene from Flashdance (for those of you who do not know what I am talking about, you should look it up)

One of my super fun couples sessions (not an engagement shoot) this one’s for their anniversary. We set out for this one to have a more creative and fun feel from the get go. Eugene actually attended UCSD and graduated in 2009 before going on to meet Joanie back in the Bay Area. The two are them are pretty darn awesome together and were a real treat to work with. Talking with Eugene beforehand, I just knew this one was going to be awesome. So if you like Eugene and Joanie are looking for something fresh and new check us out and drop us a line.

We of course wanted to start the day off with simple traditional couple shots for the family
